"My comfort in my suffering is this:
Your promise preserves my life."- Psalm 119:50
Have you ever felt disappointed when a friend or family member does not keep their promises? When someone says they will do something but does not follow through, how does that make you feel?
With every broken promise, whether big or small, important or insignificant, the experience affects the relationship. Trust is fragile and with every broken promise, a person's reliability gets chipped away. It is hard to depend on people we are unable to trust to do what they say.
Contrast, we can depend on God. God fulfills his promises every time. He is reliable and follows through on His word. In Numbers 23:19, the bible writes:
"God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?"
Psalm 119 also discusses God's promise multiple times. In the passage, the concept of God's unfailing love, hope, righteousness, and salvation being a part of this promise. It also speaks to the relationship of us as God's servant being able to stand unwavering when tested knowing God's promise. We can rejoice, meditate and be sustained on God's promises, and others can fear knowing that God's promise. We, in turn, can promise to obey God's words and his laws.
A promise is powerful when it is kept, consistently.
Reflection: Take some time and read Psalm 119. Notice how the word promise was used and what that means on your journey in developing your faith and relationship with Christ.
