14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

- Matthew 5:14-16

Jesus spoke to the crowds in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, and it is here that He spoke about Salt and Light. He puts an emphasis on how important we are, and the value we give to those around us. As His creation, and as a follower of Christ, not only do we have a light inside us, but He is implying that we are the light itself, for the world. As Christians, we sometimes want to hide our faith, and as humans, there are times when we may feel small or insignificant. Jesus makes it clear here that as the light we cannot be hidden. That others will be aware of our light, and put us in a place where we can be seen such that it gives light to those around us or close to us. You are meant to be seen.

In the comparison to the light, Jesus describes the way others will get to experience our light is by witnessing the good deeds we do. It is not by the label of who we are as Christians, but it is by us taking action to do good deeds, making a difference. Others will glorify God because of the good works that we do. Our light would be evident by how we live, by the actions we take, by the good deeds we do.

So, be joyful and recognize the power and opportunity you have as the light of the world, and shine.

Reflection: How have your actions been this week? What good deeds can you do as the light of the world to live the gift God has given you?
