I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
- Romans 8:18
This week, I have been meditating on the thought of the 'glory' of God. Having spent time throughout my life in the Christian faith, I have often said the words "glory to God", "glory be to God", and "being in awe of how glorious God is". But I question - do I really understand what this glory means?
In preparation for this week's devotion, I stumbled upon many verses and passages where the glory of the Lord was referenced. For example, in 2 Chronicles 7:1-3, it is written: "When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, 'He is good; his love endures forever.'"
Glory of God then is not only a concept of the amazingness and awesomeness of God, but something that can actually be interpreted as tangible, powerful, and full. Those who experience it also are moved to understand that God is good and how great His love is. In John 11:40, Jesus informs us as well that if we believe, we will have the opportunity to see the Glory of God.
What is most remarkable to me was the verse in Romans 8:18. Not only do we get to see and experience God's glory, but that the glory of God would be "revealed in us". It may come at the cost of our current toils and sufferings. Yet when we consider the blessing of the glory of God that would be revealed in us, it makes the suffering insignificant and worthwhile. This can give us hope during hard times.
While we may still be on a journey of understanding and it will be difficult for us to fully grasp what the glory of God means, it is something we can trust will come to light in time. At this moment, what we can appreciate is the magnificence of God's power and wonder. May we praise and worship God's glory, His love and goodness. As Psalm 24:10 states, God is the "King of Glory".
Reflection: What does the glory of God mean to you?
