“16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
- John 3:16-17
John 3:16 is one of the most powerful and iconic bible versions that represents the Christian faith. It speaks to the tremendous love God has for us and for humanity. During dark times we may all go through from time to time, there are moments when one may feel lonely, isolated, unwanted, or unloved. Yet this verse is a perfect reminder of how important we are to our Father in heaven. We are so loved, that God was willing to sacrifice Jesus, his only Son, such that we may be saved.
Verse 16 also gives specific and direct instructions as to how to have salvation and eternal life. All God asks is for our faith, our belief, and our trust in him. He has shown us the way. We may struggle in our faith sometimes, and some may argue it's the hardest thing to do. In so many ways though, it is also the easiest thing we have to do: Just believe.
The verse that follows further explains the purpose of God's actions in sending Jesus to our world. While there is definitely justice and judgement in God's approach, in this, he clarifies that Jesus is here to save us, and not to condemn us, no matter how we may have sinned or done wrong. Judgement, instead, happens if we do not believe in him. This chapter further speaks to how people tend to gravitate towards darkness because of our evil deeds and tendencies, but God is the light and we are asked to not be afraid of having our sins shown and to move towards the light. It is through Jesus that our lives may be saved.
When I read this passage, I am filled and overwhelmed by the incredible and indescribable love God has for us. Even though this verse is so well known, it never ceases to lose power or meaning for me, and it moves me to the core. And for you as well, I hope you know--
You are loved.
Reflection: In prayer and meditation, memorize, read, and dwell on these 2 verses. Think on what this means for you and how it makes you feel, and converse with God through prayer and thankfulness.
