In our culture, we think of kings, queens, and other royalties as people that we regard highly and serve. We would imagine that they have many staff and subjects who would take care of them, helping them, serving them, making sure they have everything they need. Although good kings and queens show humility and dedicate their lives to serving their country and citizens, it is still hard to fathom someone of a high stature to do any grunt work or be in roles that may be regarded more for the common people.
Yet, when Christ came, He lived as one of us and showed immense humility. His life was one that was full of service in the most humble of ways. He was not afraid of associating Himself with those that are outcasted by society, and He was not afraid to roll up His sleeves to help others. A prime example was in Matthew 26 when He washed his disciples' feet. It was a shock to the disciples when Jesus did this, but it was a way for Christ to teach the disciples on what they must do for others. Christ leads by example. He shows us the way to lead our lives, by serving others.
I am reminded of a worship song, called You Are My King (Amazing Love), written by Billy James Foote. Within this beautiful song are the lyrics:
Amazing love, how can it be?
That you, my king would die for me.
It is a wonder to me too that our King would serve us, and die for us. That is Christ's love for us.
