The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.

- 1 Samuel 17:37

When I was growing up, I looked up to and respected those who were older than me and was often timid and quiet in their presence. Then, when I was a young professional, usually as a younger individual than my peers and colleagues, I had to build my courage and confidence to fulfill my leadership responsibilities. It was difficult, but with each experience, I learned "what I was made of" and realized that I had skills and capabilities that could be a true asset to the team. It required me, however, to be bold and not be afraid to step up.

Such is the lesson in the David and Goliath story. In this narrative, Goliath was feared by many and he was large and menacing. No one had dared to challenge him and Saul and the Isrealites had difficulties finding a champion to fight Goliath on their behalf. Young David, a shepherd, stepped up and with a strong faith and the conviction to serve. He volunteered to fight Goliath. Upon hearing this, 'Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” (1 Samuel 17:33)'. Young David proved himself to Saul and convinced him to let him go into battle.

Unaccustomed to appropriate armour, David decided to enter the battle with only his staff, a few stones and a sling, along with his trust in God. With God's protection and guidance, David was victorious. It was a surprise to many when he defeated Goliath, and this has become a famous legend and a teachable moment. In the story of David and Goliath, we learn that it is not the size, nor experience, nor age that defines our outcomes -- it is having God in our lives. And young people should feel inspired and encouraged, knowing that God will use you to make a difference and be a leader for others, regardless of age. And for the rest of us, we should refrain from underestimating our youth. Instead, we should believe in and support our youth, helping to build them as champions in Christ.

Reflection: What is the "Goliath" in your life? Pray to God for courage and his guidance, and find your strength to confront those challenges in your life.
