Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
- Mark 8:17
The gospels describe narratives of crowds of thousands of people coming to see Jesus teach, and concerns about not having enough food. Jesus performed miracles and turned five loaves of bread and two fish into an abundance of food, with baskets of food left over. Similar miracles are also shown with breaking of seven loaves of bread for four thousand. Yet, in Mark 8, we see the disciples being worried once again about having a lack of food for themselves because they have only brought one loaf of bread on the boat with them. Despite having witnessed numerous signs and evidence of God's miracles, the disciples themselves continue to worry. Jesus reminded them of what they have seen and warned them not to give into the temptation of worries.
We can learn so much through this passage -- how often have we seen God's miracles or have had our prayers answered, only to have turned around the next moment continuing to doubt? How many of us attest that we trust in God but yet we proceed to be anxious about the future? We know that God would provide for us, and it is not uncommon for us to still question God. I'm guilty of this, for sure. The disciples were too.
This is why it is important that we focus on the Word of the bible, and practice gratitude, focusing on those moments that help us be grounded in our faith. When we see signs of God's faithfulness and love for us, take note, and remember them for they will help in times of trouble. God provides, and continues to provide. Do not give into the worry of the troubles of the world. Be confident in God's grace and steadfast support for us.
Reflection: What moments in your life has God provided for you? How can you remain rooted in this confidence that God will provide for you?
