“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep His promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.”
- Hebrews 10:23-24
During dark times, it is easy to lose hope and be consumed by despair. We may want to give up, we may feel lost, and we may feel unworthy for the salvation that Christ has provided for us. In this Hebrews passage, God asks us to trust in Him, and to encourage our fellow brothers and sisters.
As I am writing this, the world is presently undergoing the pain and suffering of the Covid-19 pandemic. This pandemic has tested our endurance, and has been a difficult time for many. We have lost friends and family, and our usual routines have been disrupted beyond what we can imagine. As I was looking for a passage for comfort those who may be struggling through these dark times, I have stumbled upon this passage and it seemed to be the most appropriate. It reminds us to provide motivation for each other, and to trust God, even in these uncertain times--especially during these uncertain times. The passage goes on to talk about remembering to meet with each other, which we can still achieve in this Covid-19 environment by doing so virtually, or by phone. Social gatherings in person may be on hold for now (please heed to the public health guidance), but that does not stop us from reaching out to care for one another and to be a source of motivation in times of need.
Later in the chapter, it goes onto mention that "Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering". True, there can be public humiliation, persecution, or the risk of losing everything when we choose to follow Christ. There can be difficult days that we must endure. Be grounded in the understanding that there is a greater reward awaiting for us in heaven as God promised. For now, we do good works, and perform acts of love.
As Hebrews 10:36 writes, "Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that he has promised." Stay strong, remain steadfast in your faith, love one another. Let these simple words be my encouragement to you, such that you may motivate others in turn.
Reflection: During these unusual times, how can you safely still encourage and motivate others while remaining 'distant' for safety? What is your hope during these times and how can you practice holding onto your hope? What can help you persevere during these times?
