“Then he added, 'Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: 'I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.' For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
- Matthew 10:13
When Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples over over for dinner, Pharisees criticized Jesus and his disciples for sitting down and eating with "tax collectors and other disreputable sinners". Jesus responds by articulating that it is those who are sick that need a doctor.
As Christians, sometimes we are more comfortable being with those who we perceive as being religious, and we can be quick to judge those who are different, who may be struggling with their faith, who sin. The reality is that we are all sinners. We are not elevated in our status because we measure ourselves to be 'holier' than others. Instead, humble yourselves, and show mercy, love, and kindness to others. We all struggle with our faith and we all sin. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ, and it is through Christ that we are saved, not by our own actions.
For those that we may perceive to be different than us, do not turn your nose up at them. We should embrace those in need, those that are stereotyped in unfavourable positions, those who are outcasted by society, and sit with them at the table as equals. Accept and love them as our neighbours, as our family.
Reflection: Reflect and be honest. Are there groups of people that you may be adverse to sitting with? Are there people that you regard less than your status? Pray to God to remove this judgement and to change your heart. Find ways instead to see them for the wonderful human beings they are, connect with them, and humble yourself. Show mercy.
