“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God's critic, but do you have the answers?”
- Job 40:2
There are many reasons why we may be in a situation where we question God. It can come from a place of not understanding. It can come form a place of arrogance. It can come from a place of anger. It can come from a place of despair. Whatever the reason, we can make the mistake of challenging God when we do not know everything, or anything for that matter. In an age where information is so readily available to us, we think we know it all, when truly, we barely know anything at all.
In the book of Job, Job was a faithful and blameless servant who was put to the test when God allows Satan to remove his comfort, his family, his possessions, and his health. He suffers and defends he is innocent, undeserving of the suffering that has been cast upon him. Throughout the book, there were various conversations Job has with his friends asking as to why suffering occurs, and God eventually challenges Job's knowledge of the world. It is through this conversation that we realize that the world is complex and we know so little of how the creator has designed the world and how justice works. It is here that we realize God is all knowing and we ought to trust in God. Job repents, surrenders to God his life and continues to praise God. Eventually, Job is blessed in more ways than he originally started with.
In the passages in which God questions Job on how the world came to be, God shows the detail and thought that goes into each aspect in the design of the world and life. We come to realize that God is all knowing and that are so many things we may not know or understand, and we are not in a position to criticize or argue with God because we know little. While the search for truth is always amicable, we also need to remain faithful and trust in God, even in the toughest of times. Sometimes we may not know the answers and it can be frustrating. It is part of our journey to accept that there are things we may not ever understand.
Reflection: Pray and ask God to help you accept things you may not understand and to trust in Him.
