"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith."
- Romans 1:16-17
Have you ever been shy about sharing the Word of Christ or your identity as a follower of Christ because you are concerned about what others think?
I have. I am embarrassed to admit that there are parts of me that are concerned about what others think. I worry that they may have misconceptions of what it means to be 'religious'. I worry that they may think I am a prude, or unrelatable, or 'uncool'. I worry that they may think I share certain extreme views that I do not personally agree with. I worry that they may not like me.
In a way, it seems childish, and definitely insecure. What's worse is that while I rejoice about the good news of Jesus's salvation and know that being rooted in my faith is the centre of my being, I almost live as though my faith is the best kept secret. As well, wanting to be approachable, welcoming and accepting, I am constantly concerned that if I speak about the gospel, I may offend others who may believe differently.
Yet we are called to share the gospel. These verses in Romans remind us that we do not need to be ashamed of the gospel. It IS good news meant to be shared that salvation is available for those who believe. Knowing that this is true, why would I not want my friends, family to also be saved?
Being transparent about my identity as a Christian and feeling comfortable to share my faith is something I have to work on, with the spirit of God. I recognize that I sometimes downplay my Christianity in pursuit of social acceptance and fear, but I will pray constantly to have Paul's courage to speak boldly about the gospel. It is something I am on a journey to work on.
And if you are too, know that you are not alone. Stand strongly and proudly in your faith. Be considerate of others but know that you can be your authentic self in your faith and do not be shy to share the good news.
Reflection: The verse said that the righteous will live by faith. In reflection of today's devotion, how will you live by faith and share the gospel?
As you enjoy the gospel, praise and worship music on Christian Calm Radio, take a moment to complete a devotional study. This week's study is on Romans 1:16-17, where we will focus on not being ashamed of the gospel or of our faith.
